What is a domain?

A domain is an English word whose synonym is place. A domain name is your website name. A domain name is an address where Internet users can access your website. A domain name is used for finding and identifying computers on the Internet. Computers use IP addresses, which are a series of numbers. However, it is difficult for humans to remember strings of numbers. Because of this, domain names were developed and used to identify entities on the Internet rather than using IP addresses.

A domain name is a unique, easy-to-remember address used to access websites, such as ‘digitalittreatment.com’, and ‘reflexthemes.com’. Users can connect to websites using domain names thanks to the DNS system.

So far we have learned “what is a domain”. Suppose you have an organization. Which has a slightly unique name that carries the identity of the organization. Similarly, if you want to create a website for your organization, you will need a unique domain name. A website will be created by connecting it to the server you have purchased and from which the user will be able to search the information of your organization by typing the name of your domain using the internet.

The domain name must be registered before you can use it. Every domain name is unique. No two websites can have the same domain name. If someone types in ‘tanemrahman.com’, it will go to your website and no one else’s.

A domain name can be any combination of letters and numbers, and it can be used in combination with various domain names extensions, such as .com, .net, and more. Domain Name must have a minimum of 3 characters and a maximum of 63 characters. Only English letters, numbers from 0-9, and “-” (Hyphen) can be used inside the domain name. Each domain consists mainly of 2 parts. One is Domain Name and the other is Domain Suffix. The price of a domain name typically runs between $10-25 per year. What are the types of domains?

Now that you have a better understanding of what a domain is and how a domain works. So what kind of domain registration do we do? What types of domains are there I will discuss them below.

1. Top-Level Domains (TLDs)

In 1985, The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) released six top-level domain names. These top-level domains (TLD) became known as domain name extensions and represent the highest level in the Domain Name System hierarchy. They include .com, .net, .edu, .org, .mil, and, .gov.

2. Country code top-level domains (ccTLD)

Different countries have their own domains, they are Country Code Top Level Domain. For example .bd (Bangladesh), .pk (Pakistan), .us (America), .uk (United Kingdom), .in (India) etc.

3. Generic top-level domains (gTLD)

Generic top-level domains function as a category of top-level domains within the DNS. As of now, there are currently 21 generic top-level domains within the root zone, which is the highest level of the domain name system structure.

4. Second-level domains

You’ve probably seen these domain names before. We’re talking about a domain that sits directly below a top-level domain name. We’re not going to get too technical here because it’s easier to show with examples, particularly when it comes to country codes. For example; .co.uk, .gov.uk, and, .ac.uk 

5. Subdomains

Subdomains are useful because they don’t require webmasters to purchase an additional domain name to create divisions within their site. Instead, they’re able to create a subdomain that effectively points to a specific directory on the server. This can be super useful for campaign sites and other types of web content that should be kept separate from the main site. For example; info.delisale.com.bd
